The Italian postman finally delivered meaning we were free to leave Rome. We hadn’t intended to stay so long – although a wonderful city and essentially poolside holiday we were starting to itch for the next chapter. So we packed up an got on the road again on Sunday morning. The camper started..well second time in truth….but is running beautifully and we swiftly made our way to our pit stop of Cassino – famous for its Benedictine monestary and one of the bloodiest scenes of WWII. We decided on a night in a cheap and cheerful hotel as campsites were few and far between. We had planned to go into town and find a cafe full of Italians to watch the football but in the end had to settle for the hotel restaurant where we were the only guests and so watched the match with the waiters who promised the chef wouldn’t do anything to our food in protest agains the Anglais.
We made the most of a real bed and had a lie in and headed off mid morning making it to Pompeii by the afternoon. It being a Monday the lorries were back on the road and scaring me with their overtaking as well as the bonkers driving a la Italiano. Think Ferrari should spend a bit of time scouting on their own roads as each driver is a F1 driver in practice. We would, however, like to commend them on the clever shaded areas for parking doubling up as solar panels (random but we were genuinely impressed)
We are in a campsite 50metres from the entrance to Pompeii and the facilities are a bit of a stark contrast to the 4* we are used to in Rome. That being said its important to have the bad to appreciate the good. We are camping after all….oh and it is 16Eur a night so….. It’s also called camping Zeus and is next to another one called camping Spartacus…..it was a tough choice!
Tomorrow Pompeii and possibly a 4×4 up mount Vesuvius if Dave can convince me!
Staying in a hotel and having a tv for the first time in months has brought up a few discoveries: 1, Dawsons Creek is just as silly dubbed into Italian and 2, the weather men and woman appear to be from the army as they stand in full military uniform in front of a map of Italy. Wonder if this makes it more accurate or just less likely for people to take the piss when a hurricane turns up instead of sunshine…….
